Essex Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) ECR Workshop
12 June 2025
The Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) at Essex is organising an informal event on engaging with industry partners and developing interdisciplinary collaborations for early career researchers interested in technical, social, legal and ethical aspects of Data Science and AI on 18 June, 2-5pm.
They are opening up this opportunity to ECRs working in relevant disciplines at the other EARC universities. Whilst the focus is, of course, on the work going on at Essex, it is a great opportunity for ECRs to network, to share insights from their own work, to learn new skills around innovation, and to potentially develop useful collaborations.
We are very supportive of this, and can offer a small number of travel bursaries for those who do want to take part and aren’t able to access or use travel funding at their own university. Spaces are strictly limited (~10) for those outside of Essex.
If you want to take part, please register here. If you would like to apply for a travel bursary, contact me directly after you have done so and your place has been confirmed.

Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) ECR Workshop
University of Essex
Wednesday 18 June, 14:00-17:00
Who is this event for?
All early career researchers (PhD students, postdocs, new lecturers) interested in Data Science and AI (broadly conceived) and engaging with industry partners. It will be an opportunity to learn more about applying for funding with industry partners (Innovation Partnerships Team), and explore common research interests with other ECRs across the university. The event will feature interactive discussion groups, with the aim of connecting potential collaborators and identifying opportunities for grant proposals.
When and where?
Wednesday, 18 June, 14:00-17:00, NTC 1.02
Will there be snacks?
Yes! Coffee & snacks will be provided (feel free to bring a reusable mug).
What will happen at this event?
We will first host a presentation by the Innovation Partnerships Team who will tell us about different ways to engage with industry partners and obtain external funding. They will also answer any questions you may have about this process. We will then split up into different roundtables chaired by IADS fellows. The aim of these is to have informal discussions exploring how the social impacts of AI and data science and sustainable technology design and implementation relates to research activities across the university – ideally, every participant will leave the event not just with a better sense of research at Essex but also with some new collaborators and maybe even a nascent idea for a grant proposal!
Schedule:
14:00-14:10: Welcome
14:10-14:40: Presentation by Innovation Partnerships team
14:50-15:10: Short introduction presentations for the roundtables by IADS fellows
15:15-16:30: Discussion roundtables chaired by IADS fellows focused on research challenges & potential collaborations & funding proposals
· Social Impacts of AI and Data Science: Labour issues, algorithmic discrimination & technology ethics (Nina Markl, IADS fellow)
