Training: Understanding the wider political context for research funding

10 April 2025

Monday 28th April – 10am

The University of Kent will be hosting a session by the Eastern Arc Director, Phil Ward, to help Eastern Arc colleagues understand the wider political context for research funding in the UK.

A key to writing a successful research or innovation proposal is to understand the politics behind a call. Why is the Government, or individual funders, prioritising particular themes, disciplines or issues, and how should you position your work to be of relevance and value to these?

This presentation gives you an introduction and a ‘cheat sheet’ for the political context in which the Government is distributing a record-breaking £20.4bn of R&D funding this year, and to an understanding of its explicit and implicit priorities. More broadly, it will signpost sources of information that will help you to discover the fundamental drivers for all funders, and thereby frame your proposal so that it has the best chance of success, and also to think ahead about areas of growth and opportunity.
