ARISE Community of Practice

The ARISE initiative co-ordinates a Coastal Resilience Community of Practice. The Community of Practice is a space for individuals, organisations, policy makers, managers, community members and activists to share insights, build collaborations, and learn about and from each other.
Through the Community of Practice, members make connections to others who share a belief that coastal lives, coastal living and our coastal environment in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Kent could be made more sustainable, resilient and prosperous. It is driven by the belief that we are more powerful together than we are apart, and aims to find a common vision for the southern east coast that builds wide support and draws in the resources we need to make this vision achievable.
The Community of Practice meets twice yearly at in-person workshops, with online meetings and activities between those workshops. To join us, please use this link.
Members will receive updates about new events and publications as well as invitations to the online activities.
Coastal Resilience Community of Practice Launch event
On 22nd May 2025 we launched our new Community of Practice. Hosted by the University of Essex, 40 people gathered to meet, discuss and establish some initial themes for the Community going forwards.
Using the Open Space meeting format, we uncovered 34 different discussion topics that fell into six broad themes:
- Social, political and demographic change
- Climate change impacts
- Ecology, wildlife and human connection to nature
- Creativity and civic agency
- Food, farming and fisheries
- Housing and health care
These themes are broad, open to interpretation and fluid. In a year’s time, the Community may change these themes due to participant interest. You can download the full book here.
